1/13/2007: Diggeress Te Kanawa - Weaving a Kakahu
Diggeress Te Kanawa (Ngati Maniapoto) has taught the traditional skills passed on to her, stepping outside the customary practise of keeping the knowledge within your own family, to ensure a dynamic future for Maori weaving. “I wanted to share what I had with whoever wanted to learn…I was told if I thought I could carry it, then I had the permission to do so…” It is this generosity of spirit and artistic excellence that has rewarded Diggeress Te Kanawa with the 2006 Te Tohu Tiketike o Te Waka Toi. This premiere Te Waka Toi award is presented to artists who have demonstrated a lifelong contribution to Maori arts and culture and are leaders in their field. Diggeress Te Kanawa received the Te Tohu Tiketike supreme award for her lifelong dedication to raranga and whatu from Te Waka Toi at Te Kuiti on Sunday November 19th. The award was made in the presence of her whanau and friends at Te Tokanganui a Noho Marae. To coincide with this special occasion a reprint of her book "Weavng a Kakahu" was released by her family and Bridget Williams Books Ltd.
